Vitamin A, Omega 3, and Lutein supplements

Currently in Canada, patients with inherited retinal dystrophies are offered Vitamin A, Omega 3, and Lutein supplements which can help protect vision by slowing down the disease process. Although no prescription is required for these supplements, it is important that you are seen by a retinal specialist before starting this treatment, because certain patients (e.g. those with mutations in ABCA4) cannot take Vitamin A. Furthermore, if you currently taking this treatment, remember to have your liver tests checked every year as Vitamin A can potentially cause toxicity (although this is extremely rare).

Doses for adults: Vitamin A 15000 units daily

   Omega 3 1250 mg daily

   Lutein 6 mg daily

For Children (under 18 yrs): Vitamin A 5000 units daily

     Omega 3 1250 mg daily

     Lutein 6 mg daily

If you cannot find these supplements in the required doses at your pharmacy, you can purchase them online from a reputable vendor such as Carlson Labs (feel free to ask us about vendor if you are unsure!)
